In steel making process higher hot strength and longer life of various supporting components are in demand.Flow control refractories like slide gates demands superior thermal and thermo-mechanical properties apart from corrosion to different grade of steel.During operation slide gate plates are subjected to severe thermal shock, erosion with steel stream, corrosion with deoxidiser used and abrasion with respected to infiltrated material and among the plate itself. In this work, metal bonded and carbon bonded Alumina slide gate plates were studied and compared. To improve the properties, in situ synthesised plasma fused ZrO2-SiC was incorporated in the Alumina carbon slide gate plates.Nitride bonded slide gate plates were also introduced in this work.
