Er veröffentlichte Bücher zur Papstgeschichte, zur europäischen Expansion und zum Kolonialismus, zur historischen Anthropologie undzur Vergleichenden Verfassungsgeschichte Europas. Erwähnt sei besonders seine vierbändige "Geschichte der europäischen Expansion" (1983-1990).
