You may have probably heard of families that are supported with income generating activities like rearing hens and goats by NGOs but these families end up eating them instead of using them to generate income. In fact it is as if only the hens and goats provided by NGOs are the ones that suddenly get sick and die because it is common that when one visits such families, other hens and possibly goats will be there apart from the ones they received to generate income. One of my respondents said "World Vision gave me hope I would have died by now. But they took me for treatment and bought me a guitar and motorcycle. I now move from village to village sensitisng people on HIV/AIDs". So what exactly is sustainable development? How would an NGO deal with a hungry family? Provide food relief? Support them with an income generating activity?
