Summary
A gorgeous addition to the Marie Alexander Series, these prose poems are biographical lyric essays.
Foreword
*Book has a larger marketing potential than most poetry: this collection is cross-genre and limns the border between personal essay and poem. It is both a collection of prose poems as well as a memoir and lyrical exploration of the author's life.
*Hansen has established herself in the creative nonfiction community. She teaches in the Nonfiction Program at Columbia College Chicago and will be reading from this book with Eula Biss in 2015. She has also edited a journal with emphasis on lyric essay and hybrid work: South Loop Review: Creative Nonfiction + Art.
*Should appeal to women readers: each piece is a lyrical exploration of the women in Hansen's life that have shaped her—old friends and loves, women in her family and in the media.
*Should appeal to Baby Boomer audience: poems are rich with a remembrance of the era of Patty Hearst and Watergate, and Hansen remembers that time with an atmosphere of both darkness and nostalgia.
*Hansen is the recipient of the New South Prose Prize and the Prism International Creative Nonfiction Prize. Her chapbook, 25 Sightings of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, which is included in this collection, was published by Firewheel Editions. Her first novel was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award.
