Summary

The self-taught Assyriologist George Smith (1840–76), originally an engraver by trade, was enthralled by the discoveries of Layard and Rawlinson. In this 1875 work, Smith describes his first expedition to the Middle East, where his excavations and explorations furthered understanding of the civilisations of the ancient Near East.
