Le présent volume nous révèle un nouveau Feydeau. À partir de 1908, en effet, l'auteur abandonne presque complètement le vaudeville pour inaugurer, avec Feu la mère de Madame, les farces conjugales consacrées aux dissensions des couples, avec une implacable férocité burlesque. Répondent aussi à cette définition quatre autres pièces en un acte, On purge Bébé (1910), Mais n'te promène donc pas toute nue ! (1911), Léonie est en avance (1911) et Hortense a dit : « Je m'en fous ! » (1916). À ces oeuvres on a joint les vingt-deux monologues de Feydeau parus entre 1880 et 1916, ainsi que deux pièces inachevées et sept autres inédites.
