Objectives. Echinococcosis is a biological, medical, economical and social concern of great importance. Because there have been expressed different judgements about the most successful method for the surgical treatment of pulmonary cysts we have undertaken this study. Methods. The medical data s for 181 patients of pulmonary hydatidosis treated in our clinic were retrospectively investigated. 145 of them, (80.1%) were treated surgically. 31.1% of cases were intact cysts and 68, 9% were complicated. All the data were analyzed refering to Anova and Chi- square test. Results.. The mean number of the postoperative hospitalized days for all the intervened cases was 12.8 ± 3.729. The mean number of postoperative hospitalized days for cases where capitonnage was applied was 11.38 ± 4.6 and the duration of air leak was 4.51 ± 2.888 days. There is no statisticial significance between surgical method and postoperative hospital stay. Conclusions. We concluded that complicated hydatid cysts prolong the hospitalized days of the patients, so the surgery has to perform earlier and the use of capitonnage didn t offer any advantage concerning the hospitalized days of the patients.
