This book examines the current literatures on theEast Asian Welfare State system with specialreference to a small country in Southeast Asia,Brunei Darussalam. The book analyses the contemporarywelfare state theories and suggest that the Westerntheories on welfare state expansion do notnecessarily apply to the East. To facilitate thestudy, the literatures on the East Asian welfarestate are discussed, highlighting their currenttrends as well as describing some commoncharacteristics found on the East Asian welfarestate. The article then analyses a small country inSoutheast Asia and attempts to identify if thewelfare state delivers. The conclusion is that beinga small country has their advantage which enables itto deliver effective welfare outcomes.

Hij behaalde zijn MPA-diploma (met onderscheiding) aan de Universiteit van York, Verenigd Koninkrijk.
