Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Falkland islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory, with the United Kingdom responsible for its defense and foreign affairs, however this has long been disputed by Argentina. The dispute grew into an armed conflict in 1982, when the Argentinian military junta sought to maintain power by diverting public attention from the nation's poor economic performance and the growing internal opposition and exploiting the long-standing feelings of the Argentinians towards the islands. The British sent an expeditionary force to retake the islands, and 74 days after the beginning of the war the Argentine forces were defeated. Although the United Kingdom and Argentina resumed diplomatic relations in 1990, recently discovered rich oilfields in the waters around the islands has revived tensions. Learn more about the Falklands war of 1982, its causes and social impact in this book.
