The dispute grew into an armed conflict in 1982, when the Argentinian military junta sought to maintain power by diverting public attention from the nation's poor economic performance and the growing internal opposition and exploiting the long-standing feelings of the Argentinians towards the islands. The British sent an expeditionary force to retake the islands, and 74 days after the beginning of the war the Argentine forces were defeated. Although the United Kingdom and Argentina resumed diplomatic relations in 1990, recently discovered rich oilfields in the waters around the islands has revived tensions.
