Tras cruzar el océano, un hombre y un niño llegan a un nuevo país donde se les asigna nombre y edad, y se les anima a olvidar su pasado. Extraños en una tierra extraña, aprenden español, el idioma del lugar, mientras aguardan a ser trasladados a la ciudad de Novilla, donde tienen la esperanza de encontrar a la madre del niño. Ya con sus nuevos nombres, Simón y David llegan al centro de reubicación de la ciudad. Allí, el funcionariado los trata con educación, pero no son muy serviciales. Tras mucha confusión, Simón consigue un alojamiento para ambos, y encuentra un trabajo en el puerto. Las tareas de estibador le resultan tremendamente agotadoras, pero enseguida se gana el aprecio de sus compañeros, que durante los descansos mantienen diálogos filosóficos sobre la dignidad del trabajo. En este país nadie parece particularmente feliz o infeliz. Todos cumplen sus funciones, pero no van más allá y no parecen esperar ni querer más de lo que tienen. En medio de la extrañeza que le produce esta actitud, Simón decide retomar la misión de encontrar a la madre del niño, con una dificultad añadida: todos los que llegan al nuevo país parecen haber dejado atrás sus recuerdos. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The Good Story is a fascinating dialogue about psychotherapy and the art of storytelling between a writer with a long-standing interest in moral psychology and a psychotherapist with training in literary studies. Coetzee and Kurtz consider psychotherapy and its wider social context from different perspectives, but at the heart of both of their approaches is a concern with narrative. Working alone, the writer is in control of the story he or she tells. The therapist, on the other hand, collaborates with the patient in developing an account of the patient's life and identity that is both meaningful and true. In a meeting of minds that is illuminating and thought-provoking, the authors discuss both individual psychology and the psychology of the group: the school classroom, gangs and the settler nation, in which the brutal deeds of ancestors are accommodated into a national story. Drawing on great writers like Cervantes and Dostoevsky and psychoanalysts like Freud and Melanie Klein, Coetzee and Kurtz explore the human capacity for self-examination, our wish to tell our own life stories and the resistances we encounter along the way.

About the author

J.M. Coetzee nació en 1940 en Ciudad del Cabo y estudió en Sudáfrica y en Estados Unidos. Ha sido profesor de literatura en diversas universidades de prestigio, traductor, lingüista, crítico literario y, sin duda, es uno de los escritores más importantes que ha dado Sudáfrica, ganador del premio Nobel de Literatura en 2003. En 1974 publicó su primera novela, Tierras de poniente. Le siguieron En medio de ninguna parte (1977), con la que ganó el CNA, el primer premio literario de las letras sudafricanas; Esperando a los bárbaros (1980), también premiada con el CNA; Vida y época de Michael K. (1983), que le reportó su primer Booker, el premio más prestigioso de la literatura en lengua inglesa, y el Prix Femina Étranger; Foe (1986); La edad de hierro (1990); El maestro de Petersburgo (1994); Desgracia (1999), que le valió un segundo Booker; Infancia (1998), Juventud (2002), Elizabeth Costello (2003), Hombre lento (2005), Diario de un mal año (2007) y Verano (2009). También ha publicado varios libros de ensayo, entre ellos Contra la censura (1996), Las vidas de los animales (1999), Costas extrañas (2002) y Mecanismos internos (2007). Asimismo, le han sido concedidos el premio Jerusalem y el Irish Times International Fiction Prize. En España ha sido galardonado con el Premi Llibreter 2003 y el Premio Reino de Redonda creado por el escritor Javier Marías.
