The earliest cave painting in Europe is thought to date back to the Aurignacian period, about 32,000 years ago by some paleoanthropologists. The exact purpose of the paleolithic cave paintings is not known. Since the caves in which cave paintings have been found do not have signs of ongoing habitation, it is suggested that they were not created just for decorations of living areas.
