Sometimes a city is famous all over the world for a single historical occurrence or a geographical phenomenon. Dhaka the capital of Bangladesh is one of those cities famous for many historical events. Significant monuments and historical sites present us the unique opportunity to create image and identity for the people, if properly integrated with the sites and the surrounding. Conservation and preservation should be adaptive to re-use so that the essence and character of what is preserved is kept, at the same in the old is streamlined with the new. For rapid unplanned urbanization for lack of proper conservation, these important historical monuments or sites and its surrounding areas are in great danger. Planning attitude should be to find ways and means to integrate the old with the new and perpetuate continuity in our social, cultural and physical surroundings.
