Development is what people do for themselves with their available resources in response to their shared problems. The current stalemate in development results from peoples lack of participation in development, lack of empowerment, and peoples' failure to do local resource mobilization. Sustainable and authentic development will never happen where communities suffer from dependency syndrome, and remain spectators of development projects. Participation in development projects will in the end bring ownership, accountability and real social change. At the same time we must empower the people.
