Worldwide, there are 24.3 million people who live with dementia and the total number is projected to double every 20 years, reaching 81.1 million by the year 2040. Sixty percent of dementia patients live in developing countries and this percentage is expected to surpass 70% by 2040. Dementia is a major health care issue with implications for caregivers, public services and health systems. Dementia is not curable and, therefore, specific nursing care that positively affects the quality of life of persons with dementia should be implemented.
