Diese Publikation von Paul McCarthy (geboren 1945 in Salt Lake City) entsteht anlässlich der ersten großen Ausstellung des Künstlers in Frankreich, wo sie unter dem Titel Chocolate Factory, in der Monnaie de Paris gezeigt wird. Das vielschichtige und ehrgeizige Projekt verschmilzt die Geschichte des sieben Jahre währenden Entstehungsprozesses mit der Historie des repräsentativen Ortes. Das zweibändige Künstlerbuch Chocolate Factory Paris, Pretext zeichnet die Entwicklung des Projekts von der Konzeption bis zur Realisierung in den Salons der Monnaie de Paris aus dem 18. Jahrhundert nach. Darin entwirft der Künstler ein Bild des weihnachtlichen Paris, wobei er sich besonders auf die Figur des Heiligen Nikolaus und den Christbaum konzentriert. Seine Textcollagen, Skizzen und Zeichnungen stellen Bezüge zur Kunstgeschichte, Poesie und Anthropologie her.
Der zweite, um 128 Seiten erweiterte Band 2 umfasst auch den Inhalt von Band 1.

Summary
This new publication by Paul McCarthy (*1945 in Salt Lake City) is realized on the occasion of the opening of his first large scale exhibition in France, Chocolate Factory, presented at the Monnaie de Paris. Composed of two volumes, Chocolate Factory Paris, Pretext is an artist book retracing the development of the project since its very conception to its setting in the 18th century salons of Monnaie de Paris. The book is entirely conceived by the artist around the imagery of Santa Claus and the Christmas Tree with collaged-texts, sketches and drawings by Paul McCarthy with reference to art history, poetry and anthropology.
