For years Tamy Tazi has applied her unique insights as a fashion designer into restyling contemporary Moroccan clothing, principally by bringing her aristocratic touch to the traditional caftan, along with djellabas, selhams (capes), tunics, and saroual, whether as ceremonial wear or for use in the home. Her creative genius represents a fascinating crossover between two major traditional currents that have resisted change down through the centuries.
Tamy Tazi's works establish a graceful balance between haute couture as a representative of Yves Saint Laurent, whose stylistic range has been deeply influenced by his long bond with Morocco, and the Moroccan legacy itself. But her approach goes far beyond the new sense of women's emancipation following the country's Independence, and instead involves a complete regeneration of Morocco's characteristic styles of dress. After lengthy research and documentation, along with the collection of rare specimens of Moroccan dress from the past, Tamy Tazi has used this knowledge as a starting point, liberating the caftan from its mere folkloristic aspects, and creating an entirely new range of garments that combine tradition and modern fashion.
