Thomas Paine Kydd, a young wig-maker from Guildford, is seized by the press gang, to be a part of the crew of the 98-gun line-of-battle ship Royal William. The ship sails immediately and Kydd has to learn the harsh realities of shipboard life fast. About the author
Julian Stockwin wurde 1944 in der englischen Grafschaft Hampshire geboren. Im Alter von vierzehn Jahren wurde er auf die harte Seemannsschule der Indefatigable geschickt, mit fünfzehn trat er in die Royal Navy ein. Als seine Familie nach Australien auswanderte, wechselte er in die Royal Australien Navy über. Er diente acht Jahre lang; seine Fahrten führten ihn den Fernen Osten, die Antarktis und in die Südsee. Er kämpfte im Vietnamkrieg, wo sein Schiff Teil einer Flugzeugträgerflotille war. Nachdem er die Marine als Portepeeunteroffizier verlassen hatte, lebte Stockwin für eine Weile in Hongkong, wo er als Offizier in die Reserve der Royal Navy eintrat. Er erhielt den Orden der MBE (Member of The British Empire) und schied mit dem Dienstgrad eines Kapitänleutnants aus. Heute lebt er mit seiner Frau Kathy in Guildford.
