Traill received his M.A. in Classics from St Andrews in 1964 and, after teaching for a year at McGill University, Montreal, went on to study for a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. He taught at the University of California, Davis, from 1970 till his retirement in 2012. He is perhaps best known for his biography Schliemann of Troy: Treasure and Deceit (1995) and his role in bringing Schliemann's archaeological reporting into question.
