Zusatztext Every Oxford college should have a history like this. Well documented, handy in weight and size, neat and handsome in shape and appearance, it carries the reader smoothly and readably down the centuries while somehow finding room for ample illustrations, maps, tables, budgets and poems. Klappentext Trinity is one of Oxford's most beautiful colleges, a close community set in four acres of gardens in the centre of the City. This book focuses on the lives of ordinary Fellows, students, and servants of the College, and uses many contemporary records and early prints and photographs. It tells the story of how one small college of celibate priests has been shaped by national and world events over the past 450 years, and how it has evolved into the centre ofeducation and research that it is today. Publication will coincide with the 450th anniversary of the foundation of the College in 2005. Zusammenfassung This history of Trinity College from 1555 until the present day illustrates the changing shape and purpose of one of Oxford's colleges: a training house for Catholic priests in the sixteenth century; a pillar of the Anglican establishment in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; a centre of educational reform in the nineteenth; a thriving part of Oxford University today. Clare Hopkins makes extensive use of archival sources and the records of ordinary students to focus on the changing nature of a college community. This book exemplifies the evolution of Fellows into tutors, undergraduate commonors into students, and household servants into staff, and shows how the needs of these mutually dependent groups have shaped the environment around them.
