The Virgin Martyr is a play written by Philip Massinger in 1620 and published in 1631. The story is set in ancient Rome and revolves around the character of Dorothea, a Christian virgin who is in love with a Roman soldier named Theophilus. However, Theophilus is already betrothed to the Emperor's daughter, and when he rejects her advances, she accuses him of rape. Theophilus is sentenced to death, and Dorothea, who refuses to renounce her faith, is also condemned to die. The play explores themes of love, faith, and martyrdom, and features a cast of colorful characters, including the Emperor Maximinian, the wicked Empress Eudoxia, and the Christian bishop Timotheus. The Virgin Martyr was popular in its time and has been praised for its poetic language and dramatic intensity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
