Zusatztext [Clarke's] account of Descartes on the workings of the human body and brain is intelligent and informative. His discussion of dualism is philosophically informed and suggestive. His biography is massively knowledgeable and erudite, bringing together recent discoveries and revealing many facts about Descartes' life. Informationen zum Autor I arrived in Britain in 1967 to join my mother and stepfather at the age of 14. After leaving school at 16, I spent three years in the British Army. After leaving the army, I worked as a truck driver for many years, until 1992 when I returned to academic studies. In 1997 I achieved a 2:1 (Hons.) degree from Luton University, followed by a post-graduate Diploma and a Masters' degree from De Montfort University in 2004. My first book, Stolen Inheritance, was published in 2019, after many years of research. Man, God, Religion, and State is my second publication and I hope readers will find it stimulating and enjoyable. Klappentext Descartes is possibly the most famous of all writers on the mind! but his theory of mind has been almost universally misunderstood! because his philosophy has not been seen in the context of his scientific work. Desmond Clarke offers a radical and convincing rereading! undoing the received perception of Descartes as the chief defender of mind/body dualism. For Clarke! the key is to interpret his philosophical efforts as an attempt to reconcile his scientific pursuits with the theologically orthodox views of his time. Zusammenfassung Descartes is commonly read as the paradigm defender of substance dualism, a theory caricatured by Ryle as the 'dogma of the ghost in the machine'. The author shows that a failure to engage with Descartes's scientific work leads to a wholesale misunderstanding of his theory of mind. This book is of interest to scholars and students of Descartes.
