Five railroads once passed through Ulster County, with Kingston being the main hub. These railroads"the Central New England Railway, the West Shore Railroad, the New York, Ontario & Western Railway, the Wallkill Valley Railroad, and the Ulster & Delaware Railroad"provided a means to transport produce and products from New York States emerging frontier to New York City, some 70 miles south of Ulster County. About the author










Stephen Ladin is an artist and cultural administrator. He is a frequent user of rail trails and an advocate for the preservation of rail transportation, both recreational and commercial. Glendon Moffett holds a degree in chemical engineering and a master of business administration from Northeastern University. After working 13 years at Raytheon Company and later for IBM, he is now retired.
