CHANTS D INNOCENCE CHANTS D EXPERIENCE

William Blake (1757-1827) brille au firmament de la littérature universelle comme un astre énigmatique. Manieur de mots, il écrit des poèmes ; manieur de burin, il grave des planches où les images servent d'écrin aux vers ; manieur de pinceau, il les enlumine à l'aquarelle. C'est ainsi qu'il compose en 1788 son premier grand recueil, les Chants d'Innocence : dans un style naïf et doux emprunté aux comptines et aux berceuses, il contemple avec attendrissement la petite enfance et s'émerveille de la présence du Dieu sauveur. Mais en 1974, selon la même technique, il grave des Chants d'Expérience qui, reprenant les Chants d'Innocence, en offrent la version noire et comme maudite : enfance maltraitée, Dieu méchant, monde déchu, universel esclavage. C'est qu'entre ces deux dates celui qui avait vu passer les anges s'en est allé visiter l'Enfer et, de retour, a composé, gravé et enluminé un long texte en prose, le Mariage du Ciel et de l'Enfer, parodie sarcastique de Swedenborg, virulente charge contre les églises, les lois et les conventions morales, où il procède à une inversion des valeurs qui culmine dans des « Proverbes de l'Enfer » bien dignes de figurer dans une anthologie de l'humour noir. C'est ce texte, le plus célèbre du poète, qui a fait écrire à André Gide : « L'astre Blake étincelle dans cette reculée région du ciel où brille aussi l'astre Lautréamont. »
