Sur un tombeau romain, on pouvait lire : «Ce qui fait notre vie ? Les bains, le vin, les femmes.» Les anciens Romains, en effet, avaient un appétit de plaisir, de bonheur, que l'on a parfois sous-estimé - ou au contraire caricaturé avec le cliché des «Romains de la décadence». Comme le rappelle Sénèque dans une de ses lettres à Lucilius, «l'unique félicité, c'est de faire fête à la vie». Ce livre présente cette dimension originale et attachante de la civilisation antique.
Après un passage obligé sur le thème «plaisir et morale» - car la philosophie n'est jamais bien loin -, il analyse toutes les formes de plaisir : l'art de vivre à la ville, les fêtes, la table, la villégiature, les plaisirs des femmes, l'amour, les plaisirs de l'esprit... Sans jamais devenir grossier, il n'élude aucune des dimensions particulières de l'amour à Rome, comme les lupanars et l'homosexualité.
Une introduction brillante à un aspect souvent méconnu de la culture latine.
