The modern world faces very different challenges from the ancient world, with much larger populations, more urban development and greater pollution. Yet management today is so important that we cannot ignore the approaches of the past if we are to develop sustainable decentralised technologies for water collection and conservation. We might remember that the key feature of ancient water management strategies lay in using multiple water sources, collecting local rain runoff and in the appropriate reuse of different grades of water.
