Léon l'Africain : un voyageur entre deux mondes

En 1518, un pirate espagnol offrit au pape Léon X un voyageur et diplomate nord-africain qu'il avait capturé, un certain Hassan al-Wazzân. On espérait qu'il deviendrait un symbole de la croisade contre les Turcs ottomans et la religion de l'islam que le pape désirait mener. Quinze mois plus tard, son baptême fut l'occasion d'une somptueuse cérémonie. Curieusement, il n'est resté des neuf années que cet homme passa en Italie qu'un souvenir ténu transmis oralement. Qui était-il donc, ce personnage énigmatique qu'on allait appeler Léon l'Africain ? Natalie Zemon Davis mène l'enquête et raconte, dans ce livre magnifique sur la curiosité intellectuelle, un musulman converti au catholicisme qui, aux plus belles heures de la Renaissance, ouvrit les portes de la langue et de la civilisation arabes à des humanistes italiens avides de savoir.
