La cerisaie : comédie en quatre actes

«Songez que je suis née ici, que mon père,
ma mère, mon grand-père vivaient ici :
j'aime cette maison. Sans la Cerisaie je ne
comprends pas ma propre vie et, s'il faut
vraiment vendre, qu'on me vende avec le
jardin...»
La propriété a beau représenter pour
Lioubov son enfance et le souvenir d'une
vie de nonchalance, Lopakhine, ancien serf
devenu marchand, l'achètera, mais afin d'en
abattre les arbres, comme si, pour posséder
cette Cerisaie de peu de rendement mais
qui le relie pourtant lui-même aux temps
anciens, il fallait d'abord la détruire parce
qu'ici la beauté et la mort ont partie liée.
En 1904, c'est ainsi la fin du monde
aristocratique et l'entrée triomphante d'une
classe d'entrepreneurs que Tchekhov met
en scène jusqu'aux coups de hache qui
meurtrissent le silence, quand les acteurs se
sont retirés. Et lui-même mourra quelques
mois plus tard.
