Amphitryon : comédie : 1668

Amphitryon, général des Thébains, a chargé
son valet Sosie de prévenir sa femme Alcmène
du succès qu'il vient de rencontrer au
combat. Mais le dieu Mercure a écarté Sosie
et s'est présenté à Alcmène sous ses traits.
Le vrai Sosie doit avouer à son maître qu'il
n'a pas accompli sa tâche et la stupéfaction
d'Amphitryon s'accroît lorsqu'il découvre le
peu de joie que sa femme manifeste à le revoir.
Elle proteste qu'elle a passé la nuit avec
lui... Mais c'est Jupiter qui s'était introduit
auprès d'elle sous l'apparence de son mari.
Si Molière se réapproprie en 1668 cette
fable mythologique, c'est qu'elle porte en
elle l'essence même du théâtre, où l'apparence
devient un moment le réel.
