Andromaque : tragédie

À l'issue de la guerre de Troie, Andromaque,
veuve d'Hector, est devenue la captive de Pyrrhus,
roi d'Épire. Épris d'elle, alors qu'il devait épouser
Hermione, il lui donne à choisir : le mariage avec
lui ou la mort de son fils, Astyanax. Mais sacrifier
l'enfant qu'Hector lui a confié ou le sauver
en épousant Pyrrhus, c'est toujours trahir
la mémoire de son époux défunt.
Chargé d'une ambassade auprès de Pyrrhus qui doit
lui livrer Astyanax, Oreste espère essuyer un refus :
si Pyrrhus par amour garde le fils d'Andromaque,
il renverra Hermione, dont Oreste est épris.
En 1667, toute l'originalité d'Andromaque est
sans doute de confronter deux univers si différents
et dont les tensions s'entrecroisent : celui d'Hermione,
de Pyrrhus et d'Oreste, portés par la plus aveugle
passion, et celui d'Andromaque qu'habite seul
l'amour d'un enfant et d'un mort.
