« Mon père et ma mère ne veulent pas que je vienne ici. Ils disent que c'est la bohème, ici... ils ont peur que je devienne actrice... Mais je suis attirée par ce lac comme une mouette... Mon coeur est plein de vous. » Nina deviendra bien actrice, mais elle s'éloignera de l'écrivain Treplev qui un jour a déposé à ses pieds une mouette qu'il venait de tuer : « C'est comme ça bientôt que je me tuerai moi-même. »
Mais dans les quatre tableaux de cette pièce créée en 1896, l'intrigue importe moins que la constellation de personnages divers attirés par le lac enchanteur, moins aussi que les paroles banales, et cependant saturées de sens, qu'ils s'adressent à eux-mêmes aussi bien qu'aux autres et qui disent la difficulté de communiquer. Des êtres insignifiants ? Extérieurement, remarquait Georges Pitoëff, car « le feu intérieur les dévore. Ils sont frères et soeurs des personnages de Dostoïevski ».
