About the author
Elias Lönnrot, geb. 1802 in Sammatti als Sohn eines Dorfschneiders. Der Arzt und spätere Professor für finnische Sprache und Literatur in Helsinki gab u. a. Liedersammlungen heraus, eine Abhandlung über magische Medizin, eine Flora und schrieb lyrische Reiseberichte. Herausragend aber ist das Ergebnis seiner Forschungsreisen nach Finnisch- und Russisch-Karelien: dort sammelte er die mündlich tradierten alten finnischen Lieder und schuf auf der Grundlage von etwa 75.000 Versen das Epos 'Kalevala', dessen endgültige Fassung 1849 erschien. Elias Lönnrot starb1884 in seinem Heimatort.
