This volume brings together in part previously unpublished articles from the major research areas of Otto Gerhard Oexle, the longstanding Director of the Max Planck Institute of History in Göttingen. His fundamental epistemological contributions concerning his understanding of history as historical cultural science deeply influenced the international research landscape and are thus put at the beginning of this volume. The other articles go from his thoughts and writings on memoria and cultural memory, to his understanding of the term "Stand" (class) in Medieval Europe as well as his research on the binding values and structures of social groups in society.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Otto Gerhard Oexle ist Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut für Geschichte in Göttingen und Honorarprofessor für Mittlere und Neuere Geschichte an der Universität Göttingen.
Bernhard Jussen lehrt als Professor für Mittelalterliche Geschichte an der Goethe Universität zu Frankfurt am Main. Frühmittelalterliches Europa, politische Sprache, Verwandtschaft im Kulturvergleich, historische Semantik und visuelle Kultur des Mittelalters sind seine Forschungsthemen. 2007 wurde er mit dem Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Preis der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft ausgezeichnet.
Andrea von Hülsen-Esch studierte Kunstgeschichte, Geschichte und Philosophie in Frankfurt a. M. und Göttingen. Promotion 1991, danach wissenschaftliche Referentin am Max-Planck-Institut für Geschichte, Göttingen. Habilitation 2001 an der Humboldt-Universität Berlin. Seit 2001 Professorin für Kunstgeschichte an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität.
Prof. Frank Rexroth lehrt Mittlere und Neuere Geschichte an der Universität Göttingen.
