Camilo José Cela wurde am 11. Mai 1916 in Iria Flavia/ La Coruna im nordspanischen Galizien geboren. Der Sohn eines Spaniers und einer Engländerin studierte Medizin, Jura und Philosophie in Madrid. 1939 war er als Zensor tätig. 1959 gründete er die Zeitschrift "Papeles de Son Armandas". Er starb am 17. Januar 2002 in Madrid an einer Grippe.§Auszeichnungen: Spanischer Nationalpreis für Literatur (1984), Nobelpreis für Literatur (1989), Premio Planeta (1994), Cervantes-Preis (1995).
