Summary

In 1878–80, Frederick Schwatka (1849–92) set out to find records from Sir John Franklin's lost expedition. William Henry Gilder (1838–1900) accompanied him to the Arctic and published this illustrated account in 1882. Using Inuit travelling techniques, they found artefacts and graves but no written records.
