Malala Yousafzai, geboren 1997, wurde von klein auf von ihrem Vater Ziauddin gefördert und dazu ermutigt, sich für die Rechte von Mädchen einzusetzen. Ziauddin Yousafzai leitete selbst eine Schule im pakistanischen Swat-Tal und missachtete damit das Verbot der Taliban. Malala lebt heute mit ihrer Familie in England, wo sie sich von ihren schweren Verletzungen erholt. Seit März 2013 geht sie in Birmingham wieder zur Schule. 2013 wurde sie für ihren "furchtlosen Einsatz gegen Intoleranz und Unterdrückung" mit dem "Sacharow-Preis für Menschenrechte" des Europäischen Parlaments ausgezeichnet, 2014 erhielt sie zusammen mit Kailash Satyarthi den Friedensnobelpreis.
Patricia McCormick ist freie Journalistin. Sie studierte kreatives Schreiben an der New School und rezensiert Jugendbücher und Familienfilme für die New York Times und die Zeitschrift "Parents". Die Autorin lebt in New York. 2009 erhielt sie den Gustav-Heinemann Friedenspreis.

Growing up in a village in the Swat valley in Pakistan Malala and her friends faced persecution from Islamic fundamentalists who believed women should not be educated. In 2012, Malala and her two school friends were targeted and shot when travelling home from school one day. Fortunately, Malala and her friends survived.
