Informationen zum Autor J. G. Kohl studied law, became a tutor, and then travelled in Russia in the 1830s. He returned to Germany in 1838 and published his impressions of Russia soon after. They were so enthusiastically received he decided to become a full-time travel writer. Further works were on Austria, England, Wales and Scotland, the USA and Canada but nothing equalled his success with Russia . Klappentext Presents the general features and popular manners of a large portion of the Russian Empire. Zusammenfassung At the end of the 1830s, during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I, two famous accounts, through foreign eyes, were being written about Russia. Contrary to the prevailing belief, in no country are the extremes of society brought into more frequent contact, and in few are the transitions from one class to another more frequent or sudden.
