The international brigades that fought in the Spanish Civil War against the Franco regime supported by Hitler and Mussolini are seen to the present day as the pioneers of freedom and democracy in Spain and beyond. Yet that foreign volunteers gathered nearly 100 years previously to fight on Spanish soil for a free and democratic regime is one of the forgotten episodes of the European history.
