Pourquoi l'individu change-t-il dès qu'il entre dans
un groupe ? Qu'est-ce qu'un leader et comment
la foule se laisse-t-elle diriger ? Publié en 1921,
ce texte fondamental, qui scelle la rencontre de
la psychanalyse et de la psychologie sociale, est
à l'origine, avec Au-delà du principe de plaisir
(1920) et Le Moi et le Ça (1923), d'une manière
radicalement nouvelle de penser le fonctionnement
du psychisme humain. Les principaux
thèmes en sont le narcissisme et l'identification,
la pulsion grégaire et l'hypnose, l'idéalisation
et l'état amoureux. Il est suivi pour la présente
édition de Psychologie des foules (1895),
célèbre essai de Gustave Le Bon sur lequel Freud
s'appuie pour bâtir sa théorie.
