About the author

Robert A. Day is professor emeritus of English at the University of Delaware, Newark, DE. For 19 years he directed the publishing program of the American Society for Microbiology and served as managing editor of the Journal of Bacteriology as well as eight other ASM journals. His published works include Scientific English. Barbara Gastel, MD, is professor of integrative biosciences and medical humanities at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX. Her published works include Health Writer's Handbook, and she has received awards from the American Medical Writers Association; the Council of Science Editors; and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.
