L'opéra de Vigàta

Vers 1875, à Vigàta, en Sicile orientale, un préfet dresse contre lui tous les habitants en imposant la représentation d'un obscur opéra pour l'inauguration du nouveau théâtre. Son obstination de Milanais, représentant d'un Etat étranger, met en branle une série de passions publiques et privées qui aboutit au fiasco de la représentation, puis à l'incendie du théâtre.
