Volpone

Un riche en bonne santé joue les mourants pour
abuser d'autres riches dans la Venise du XVI^e siècle.
Telle est la trame de ce Volpone inédit en français,
adaptation très libre de la célèbre pièce de Ben
Jonson. Cette comédie, genre inhabituel chez
Stefan Zweig, fait un triomphe dès 1925 sur toutes
les grandes scènes, de Vienne à Léningrad, en
passant par New York et Paris. Mais si l'argent
est le ressort du comique de Volpone, l'auteur de
La Confusion des sentiments a glissé dans son
oeuvre d'autres ingrédients qui lui donnent une
nouvelle dimension, celle d'une farce profonde sur
la manipulation, la recherche de sensations et les
faux-semblants. Bref, sur notre époque.
