Lettres Type présente une sélection de trente-sept caractères ou familles typographiques conçus, ces dernières années en France, chacun pour répondre à une commande précise.
Par ce choix, Jean-Baptiste Levée cherche à dévoiler des pratiques multiples de la typographie, ouvertes sur la société, en contradiction avec le stéréotype du créateur isolé dans sa bulle. Cet ovrage vise également à mieux faire connaître certains projets, souvent peu visibes ou mal documentés s'ils n'ont pas bénéficié d'une présentation dans un blog ou une revue spécialisé. Enfin, Lettres Type souhaite réaffirmer la nécessité culturelle d'une création typographique « sur mesure » qui trouve sa justification, son financement et son accomplissement dans l'activité économique générale, rappelant ainsi le rôle du designer comme contributeur social.
Lettres Type is bringing together 37 fonts or type families designed in response to specific commissions during the last years.
With this selection, Jean-Baptiste Levée hopes to reveal multiple typography practices, open to society, in contradiction with the stereotype of the withdrawn designer, alone in a bubble. This book also aims to make certain projects better known - projects that are often not easily visible or well-documented if they have not benefited from a presentation on a blog or in a specialist journal. Lastly, Lettres Type also wishes to reaffirm the cultural necessity of « made-to-measure » typeface design that is justified by, financed by and accomplished in general economic activity reminding us of the designer's role as a social contributor.
