La peau de chagrin. Une névrose diabolique au XVIIe siècle

La Peau de chagrin (1831) est le dernier livre
que lut Freud avant de choisir le suicide le 23
septembre 1939.
Cette histoire de pacte faustien, de peau qui rétrécit
et de vie qui raccourcit à mesure que sont exaucés
les souhaits du héros, Raphaël de Valentin, renvoyait
certainement le père de la psychanalyse à des problématiques
personnelles ; mais le roman de Balzac
fait aussi écho à un magnifique essai de 1922,
Une névrose diabolique au XVII^e siècle, que Freud
avait consacré, à travers le cas du peintre Christoph
Haitzmann, à un thème de possession similaire, et
que nous proposons ici dans une traduction inédite.
Dans ces deux textes, émergent des questions
de la société d'aujourd'hui : la tyrannie du choix,
la solitude et le non-désir, l'angoisse de mort et
la dépression, le sentiment d'exister, ou encore
le fantasme de longévité...
