With this handbook, award-winning advisor and former Dean of Students at McGill University Bruce Shore sets out to explain and demystify the human dimension of graduate supervision. The handbook is not about how to write or to help students write a dissertation; rather, Shore explores the relationships between advisors and students and the responsibilities of both parties, including the joys of a productive match and how to avoid the many possible pitfalls. In six short chapters offering pithy advice on how to conduct a productive and happy advisory relationship, Shore provides an essential guide to this often neglected dimension of professional development in academic life.

About the author

Bruce M. Shore is emeritus professor of educational psychology in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University. He lives in Montreal, Quebec, and winters in Tucson, Arizona.

In the sink-or-swim world of academia, a great graduate advisor can be a lifesaver. But with university budgets shrinking and free time evaporating, advisors often need a mentor themselves to learn how to best support their advisees. This book demystifies the advisor-student relationship, and provides tips and advice to students and advisors.
