Description

Boundary representation is the principal solid modelling method used in modern CAD/CAM systems. There have been a long series of developments on which currently available systems are based, full details of which are only partially known. Ian Stroud's thorough coverage of these developments puts this technology in perspective. It includes:

  • data structures
  • algorithms and other related techniques including non-manifold modelling
  • product modelling
  • graphics
  • disc files and data exchange
  • some applications related topics.

A basic knowledge of the technique will make it easier to use kernel modelling packages for application developments.
Ian Stroud started working with boundary representation solid modelling in 1977. Since then he has researched and is researching a wide variety of topics in and around this field. The information in the book comes from the results of this research.

List of contents

Modelling Background.- Datastructures and tools.- Euler operators.- Special representations.- Stepwise modelling algorithms.- Modelling operator definition.- Product modelling.- Feature modelling.- Graphics.- Inputting and outputting.- Modeller access.- Free-form geometry.- Applications.- The Medial Axis Transform.- Miscellaneous aspects of modelling.

Additional text

From the reviews:

"This is a comprehensive and serious work on solid modeling using boundary representation (B-reps). … This text distinguishes itself in that the author concentrates on boundary representation as the one approach for solid modeling to focus on, instead of broadly introducing various theories of the field. … The author has made an important contribution to the solid modeling literature that will be welcomed by academia and industry alike." (Minette Carl and R. Goldberg, ACM Computing Reviews, January, 2008)
