Description

Integrated Optics explains the subject of optoelectronic devices and their use in integrated optics and fiber optic systems. The approach taken is to emphasize the physics of how devices work and how they can be (and have been) used in various applications as the field of optoelectronics has progressed from microphotonics to nanophotonics. Illustrations and references from technical journals have been used to demonstrate the relevance of the theory to currently important topics in industry. By reading this book, scientists, engineers, students and engineering managers can obtain an overall view of the theory and the most recent technology in Integrated Optics.

List of contents

Optical Waveguide Modes.- Theory of Optical Waveguides.- Waveguide Fabrication Techniques.- Polymer and Fiber Integrated Optics.- Losses in Optical Waveguides.- Waveguide Input and Output Couplers.- Coupling Between Waveguides.- Electro-Optic Modulators.- Acousto-Optic Modulators.- Basic Principles of Light Emission in Semiconductors.- Semiconductor Lasers.- Optical Amplifiers.- Heterostructure, Confined-Field Lasers.- Distributed-Feedback Lasers.- Direct Modulation of Semiconductor Lasers.- Integrated Optical Detectors.- Quantum-Well Devices.- Micro-Optical-Electro-Mechanical Devices.- Applications of Integrated Optics and Current Trends.- Photonic and Microwave Wireless Systems.- Nanophotonics.

About the author

Robert G. Hunsperger has been working in the field of optoelectronics for over 40 years, first in industry (Hughes Research Laboratories, Malibu, CA) and later as a professor at the University of Delaware. In 1995, Dr. Hunsperger was made a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in recognition of his work in the field.

Additional text

From the reviews of the fifth edition:

"This book is a success. Already the fifth edition is now edited including four new chapters...By reading this book, scientists, engineers, students, and engineering managers can obtain an overall view of the theory and the most recent technology in integrated optics."

Praise for Hunsperger's, Intergrated Optics

"The text is comprehensive enough for an introductory course in integrated optics, yet concise enough to be easily readable by the practicing engineer. Well-organized, with references and an index, the book is suitable for use as a classroom text or a specialist's reference."

"This book is a success. … The book is an outgrowth of a graduate level, single-semester course in integrated optics … . Illustrations and references from technical journals have been used to demonstrate the relevance of the theory to currently important topics in industry. By reading this book, scientists, engineers, students, and engineering managers can obtain an overall view of the theory and the most recent technology in integrated optics. This book should not be missed in any libraries and laboratories dealing with modern optics." (K. Kraemer, Optik, Vol. 114 (2), 2003)
