About the author

Jim Davis kam am 28. Juli 1945 in Marion, im amerikanischen Bundesstaat Indiana, zur Welt. Er wuchs zusammen mit seinem jüngeren Bruder Dave auf der elterlichen Farm in der Hügellandschaft nahe Fairmount in Indiana auf, wo zeitweise bis zu 25 Katzen lebten. Jim Davis wäre wahrscheinlich Farmer geworden, wenn ihn als Kind nicht Asthma geplagt hätte. Daher musste er sich meist im Haus aufhalten und fing zu zeichnen an. Nach Universität und erster beruflicher Tätigkeit bei einer Werbeagentur, lernte Jim als Assistenzzeichner von Tom K. Ryan, was an Arbeitsdisziplin erforderlich ist, um einen täglich erscheinenden Strip anzufertigen, träumte jedoch auch davon, seine eigene Serie zu entwickeln. Seine erste Figur war die Reihe um eine Stechmücke "Gnorm Gnat", bevor er all seine bis dato gesammelten Erfahrungen in den Entwurf eines neuen Protagonisten steckte: Garfield.
