Ireland has a fine heritage of traditional culture and many strands of this culture endured longer on the Blasket Islands. Photography plays a major part in the storyrecording of this heritage. This collection catches the spirit of the island community, from the excitement of discovery in the late 19th century and early 20th, through the heydey of the 30s, the decline of the 40s and the legacy since 1953. Many of these photographs have never been seen in public and the view is that of the islanders and the people who witnessed their lives, up close and in person.

About the author

Daithi de Mordha, from Baile na Ghleanna, Dun Chaoin, works in The Blasket Centre, and has studied the literary heritage, language, folklore and culture of the island. He has developed the photographic archive as an integral part of the social and cultural record of the lives of the islanders. A contributor to several documentary films on the heritage of West Kerry, he recently completed an M.Phil at the Department of Folklore and Ethnology, UCC.

Summary

An extraordinary picture of a way of life and kinship recorded by generations of islanders, chronicling the life and death of the Great Blasket, evacuated in 1953 but never abandoned, a snapshot of the spirit of the island community. Many photos have never been seen in public, a view of the islanders and the people who witnessed their lives.
