Known for their subtle, sophisticated Modernist buildings
and town plans, the Swiss practice of Diener & Diener has
recently begun to design buildings that add a new lightness
and liveliness to the geometric rigor and intellectual clarity
that have always characterized their designs.
The only available monograph on the remarkable architecture
of this firm, this book covers more than 30 years of work.
Roger Diener has selected the key buildings and projects to
appear in the book. They are illustrated here with a wealth
of never-before published material from the firm's archives,
and described in detail by Sabine von Fischer. Included here
are the firm's most famous structures, such as the Novartis
Campus Forum 3 in Basel and the Swiss Embassy in Berlin,
but also smaller and less well-known but equally beautiful
projects like the 1998 Swiss Pavilion at the Frankfurt Book
Fair, as well as buildings currently under construction all
over Europe.
Two prominent architectural historians, Martin Steinmann and
Joseph Abram, have contributed essays on the intellectual
foundation of Diener & Diener's work, and Roger Diener's own
writings are also included. These incisive texts illuminate
the working processes of Diener & Diener, the partnerships
they have forged with artists, and the special relationship
that their work creates between architecture and the city.
