About the author

Christoph Martin Wieland (1733-1813) stammte aus einer Pfarrersfamilie in Oberholzheim bei Biberach. Er studierte Philosophie in Erfurt, wo er 1769 auf den Lehrstuhl berufen wurde. 1772 wurde er Prinzenerzieher am Weimarer Hof. Er begründete den modernen deutschen Roman und übersetzte Shakespeare und Autoren der Antike. Der elegante, phantasievolle Aufklärer und pointierte Satiriker steht zu Unrecht im Schatten seiner Zeitgenossen Schiller und Goethe.
